Type description
Ascospores: 6-7 x 4-5 μm, lemon-shaped, umbonate at both ends, bilaterally flattened. Perithecia (7A.b-d) 290--310 X 195--215 um. Perithecial hairs (essential for identification) not preserved in the fossil material: van Geel 1978
These ascospores are one-celled, lemon-shaped, somewhat flattened in one plane, light brown and 6–12 X 4–9 μm in size. The identification of extant Chaetomium species is mainly based on the characteristics of the intact perithecia with their apical tuft of bristles. These features are normally not observed in the fossil state.van Geel et al. 2003a:
