Type description
van Geel 1978: ascospores seven-septate, 71-92(-108) X 6-7 pm. Unripe spores of smaller size occurring in low frequencies (see 77A.b). It is known that after one winter the fruit-bodies of Geoglossum become completely mucilaginous so that the chance of finding fossilised fruit-bodies is extremely small (R.A. Maas Geesteranus, Leiden, pers. comm.).
