Type description

Van Geel et al. 1989: Paired groups of nodal xylem elements of Equisetum fluviatile (Plate XV, 244.a,b; diagr. Fig.10). Fossil rhizomes and even stem fragments of Equisetum can easily be recognized in sediments (for detailed descriptions and illustrations of E. fluviatile see Grosse- Brauckmann, 1972). The identifications are based on the characteristic cell pattern of the epidermis. During the present study it appeared that, apart from the epidermis, also conductive tissue of E. fluviatile may become fossilized. Especially the characteristic paired groups of nodal xylem, consisting of tracheary elements with thick, reticulate cell walls, can be attributed with certainty to Equisetum (see also HdV 217, p.103). Publications relevant to the morphology of recent Equisetaceae: Barratt (1920), Golub and Wetmore (1948) and Bierhorst (1958).
