Type description

Van Geel 1976: Ellipsoidal zygospores (or possibly aplanospores), smooth, measuring (52-) 61-90 (-110) X 26-37 µm. Most of the Type C spores had a longitudinal furrow which often continued round on to the other side of the spore. These furrows evidently play a role in the germination of the spores: at the time of germination the spore walls would have split along these sutures. It is probably impossible to identify Type C spores to species level since they do not show sufficiently distinguishing features. It is even possible that spores of the genus Sirogonium were present among the Type C spores.

Pals et al. 1980: all smooth Spirogyra spores (probably representing a group of species) were included in this Type. Their variation in size was always within the limits of Spirogyra Type C (Van Geel, 1976).

van Geel et al (1983b): Psilate spores with the morphology of Spirogyra spores and 170-256 × 108-145 µm in size were observed in low frequencies in samples of local zone II. These spores (Plate I, 130) far exceed the size of fossil psilate Spirogyra spores observed and described in earlier studies (Van Geel, 1976; Van Geel and Van der Hammen, 1978; Pals et al., 1980; Van Geel et al., 1981).
