Type description

Van Geel et al. 1989: Spores spheroidal, greatest diameter 54.0-72.0 μm. Wall 1.5-3.5 μm thick, densely beset with protuberances 0.4-1.0 μm in diameter, but often partly psilate. The description of recent spores of the species by Boros and Járai-Komlódi (1975, p.270) is different as far as the size is concerned: 30.0-52.3 μm, mean value 44.2 μm; walls about 1.5 μm thick. Nevertheless their description and illustrations of spores leave hardly any doubt that the HdV 215 spores are of Meesia triquetra. An additional indication is the strong correlation between the occurrence of vegetative macroscopic remains of the species and that of the fossil spores in microfossil samples from corresponding levels (Wiegers and Van Geel, 1984; see also Dickson, 1973, p.109).
