Type description
van Geel et al (1983b): Seeds 660-860 X 300-410 µm, inequilateral (one side almost straight), with a clear hypostase at the chalazal end. Seed coat consisting of two distinct cell layers. Outer layer (undamaged in well-preserved specimens only) more or less zigzag-wise arranged groups of up to 100 µm long oblong cells, which are thin-walled, except for the middle part of the outer walls which show a clamp along the whole length of the cell. Clamps with a characteristic, pitted appearance, 7.5 µm broad and ca. 1.5 µm thick, ending at both sides in two "barbs". In corroded specimens the outer cell layer is torn up and the clamp, partly detached from the seed, may play a role in the transport or anchoring / moring of the seeds. Cells of the inner layer broader than long (direction in relation to length and breadth of the whole seed), with pointed cell borders at the short sides. Cells sclerotic, containing one large silica body or many such small bodies, or a combination of both.
